Yasir Baloch, MBBS, currently in his second year of the WashU Nephrology Fellowship Program, is spearheading the expansion of our division’s social media presence by overseeing our newly launched Instagram account, @WashUNeph.
An image-centric social media platform, Instagram has experienced explosive growth since its inception in 2010. The photo and video-sharing platform boasts over a billion monthly active users, and within the medical field has proven to be an invaluable digital tool to connect with target audiences such as the healthcare sector, medical peer groups, and the public in general.
Dr. Baloch’s background in photography and videography makes him well-suited to manage the Instagram account. His journey into photography began with his fascination for the night sky and astrophotography, which led him to purchase his first camera in 2012. Since then, his passion has grown to encompass nature, portraits, street photography, and aerial shots.
“Photography has enriched my life, making me a better traveller, observer, and appreciator of cultures, colours, and the beauty of the world,” says Baloch. “It serves as my creative outlet and a means to decompress.”
Most recently, he assumed the role of Creative Director in designing and producing the 2024 WashU Nephrology Fellowship Training Program video. With the collaboration of co-fellows Audrey Netzel, MD, and Atlee Baker, MD, MPH, and the fellowship program’s leadership, they created a video that successfully highlights the excellent clinical training, research, and teaching experiences we offer in our two-year fellowship program.
Previously, as a resident at Florida State University, Tallahassee Memorial Hospital, Baloch was the filmmaker for an internal medicine residency recruitment video, for which he was recognized during his graduation in 2021. He has also worked with National Geographic photographer Matthieu Paley for an assignment documenting the annual Hindu pilgrimage at Nani Mandir Lasbela, Pakistan. (See more about the pilgrimage here).
Baloch views overseeing our fellowship’s Instagram page as an exciting opportunity to showcase the incredible experiences we have here at WashU.
Baloch believes that the Instagram platform will be an excellent resource for medical students, residents, and potential applicants to see why choosing nephrology at WashU is a fantastic decision.
He adds, “I am thrilled to bring my love for photography and nephrology together in this creative endeavor and look forward to growing our online presence.”
