A team from the Forest Park Kidney Center was awarded a microgrant for their application, “Educational Videos Discussing Home Hemodialysis and Peritoneal Dialysis.” Team Members include Marlow Williams, RN, CNM, Kathy Ehrhard, RN, BSN, Shawna McMichael, RN, Cheryl Cress, RN, Lisa Koester, ANP, CNN-NP and Brent Miller, MD.
There are a large number of patients followed in WU CKD and transplant clinics who do not live in the metro St. Louis area but still would like to be followed by Washington University physicians when they begin dialysis. Many of these patients drive long distances to come to our clinic for additional education on home dialysis therapies. Our clinic staff currently educates patients on home hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis either one-on-one or in a small group presentation. This team will produce two videos, one for peritoneal dialysis and one for home hemodialysis, giving them detailed information on these options. These videos will then be sent to patients to view at home.
This effort represents a collaboration with WiseMedia who will produce two 30-45 minute videos, consisting of interviews with patients that have good experiences with the home program, along with staff interviews explaining the program. These videos will be a valuable new way to make sure our patients have the best information possible when deciding which dialysis modality is best for them.
