The International Society of Nephrology has officially recognized the relationship between the Washington University Renal Division and the Instituto Guatemalteco de Suguridad Social renal division as a Sister Renal Center Pair.
The designation encourages and promotes scientific and educational interchange between the divisions based upon past successful interactions. This relationship, led by Marcos Rothstein, MD, Professor of Medicine in the Renal Division at Washington University School of Medicine, and Vicente Sanchez Polo, MD, of the San Carlos University Renal Division in Guatemala, has already resulted in published research on mesoamerican nephropathy that has been highly accessed by readers.
Later this year, a nephrologist from Guatemala will travel to Washington University to receive advanced training in hemodialysis, access, and clinical nephrology under Dr. Rothstein’s mentorship.
