Samir Parikh, MD, Professor of Medicine and Pharmacology and Chief of Nephrology at UT Southwestern, will deliver the Eduardo Slatopolsky Lecture in Renal and Electrolyte Disorders at Medicine Grand Rounds, Thursday, October 9, 2025, 8:00-9:00 a.m., in Clopton Auditorium, Wohl Clinic. His talk is titled Metabolic Frailty in the Kidney.
Dr. Parikh holds the Robert Tucker Hayes Distinguished Chair in Nephrology, in honor of Dr. Floyd C. Rector, Jr., and the Ruth W. and Milton P. Levy, Sr., Chair in Molecular Nephrology.
His research focuses on the mechanisms underlying acute kidney injury (AKI) and sepsis. The Parikh Lab has identified mitochondrial maintenance via PGC1α and NAD⁺ as a novel pathway for resilience against acute physiological stress. Ongoing studies explore the connections between AKI, chronic kidney disease (CKD), and aging, as well as the role of NAD⁺ metabolism in injury across other organ systems.

The lectureship honors the late Eduardo Slatopolsky, MD, of WashU Nephrology, who devoted his career to the study of kidney disease and mineral metabolism. Internationally recognized for his groundbreaking work, Dr. Slatopolsky helped shape our understanding of hyperparathyroidism, hyperphosphatemia, and vitamin D biology. He passed away on April 24, 2024, leaving a legacy of scientific achievement and mentorship.
Attendance for the lecture is in-person only; breakfast will be available outside of the auditorium. Information on obtaining CME credits here.
