Zainulabdeen Alsaedi, MBChB

Zainulabdeen joins us from the nephrology fellowship program at NewYork-Presbyterian Queens Hospital (NYPQH). He earned his medical degree from Al-Kindy College of Medicine, graduating as the top medical graduate at Baghdad University in 2014. He subsequently completed an internal medicine residency at Baghdad Teaching Hospital, where he served as chief resident. After earning certification from the Arab Board of Health Specializations in Internal Medicine (CABMS) in 2022, Zainulabdeen returned to Al-Kindy College as a lecturer in internal medicine.
During his training at Ghazi Al-Hariri Kidney Transplant Center in Baghdad, Zainulabdeen authored a study on persistent hyperparathyroidism post-transplant, which was published in the European Journal of Medical and Health Sciences. His research continued at NewYork-Presbyterian Queens, where he contributed to abstracts featured at ASN Kidney Week 2024, including a case series on ketamine-induced CKD, an investigation of erythropoietin use in hospitalized dialysis patients, and a case report on high anion gap acidosis caused by 5-oxoprolinuria.
Zainulabdeen recently published three nephrology-focused case reports on pauci-immune ANCA-negative lupus nephritis, IgG4-ANCA vasculitis overlap syndromes, and IgG2 kappa cryoglobulinemic glomerulonephritis arising from MGUS. He also received the Best Oral Presentation Research Award at NYPQ Research Day for his authored cohort study on the impact of nephrology consultation on hyponatremia outcomes.
In his free time, Zainulabdeen nurtures his creativity through poetry, literature, and drawing.

Hamza Yousef Ikrai, MD

Hamza joins us from the Nephrology Fellowship Program at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC). He earned his medical degree from the Hashemite University in Jordan. Following graduation, he completed an internship at Zarqa New Governmental Hospital, then served as a general practitioner in the Emergency Department at AL-Khalidi Hospital and Medical Center in Amman. Hamza went on to complete a four-year internal medicine residency at the Islamic Hospital in Amman, where he served as chief resident during his final year.
During his nephrology fellowship at UMMC, Hamza demonstrated a strong interest in clinical research in kidney transplant pathology, glomerular diseases, and immune-mediated kidney diseases. He presented multiple abstracts at the 2024 National Kidney Foundation Spring Clinical Meetings, covering topics such as subclinical podocytopathy in ANCA-associated vasculitis, antibody-mediated transplant rejection complicated by renal lymphangiectasia, and proliferative crescentic glomerulonephritis with monoclonal immunoglobulin deposits.
Beyond his clinical and academic work, Hamza has been actively involved in humanitarian service. He volunteered with outreach teams that provided free medical care and medications to refugees displaced by regional conflicts, many of whom were living in underserved areas of Jordan. He also participated in community efforts with the Ibsher Group, a Jordan-based organization that organized social visits, outings, and gift-giving events for elderly residents of nursing homes and orphaned children.
In his free time, Hamza enjoys soccer, table tennis, swimming, and video games. He also likes discovering new restaurants and exploring local parks with his family and friends.

Mahmoud M. Musa, MD

Mahmoud joined WashU Nephrology as a transplant fellow in December, 2024, and is highlighted in our original Nephrology News announcement from January 2025.
After earning his medical degree from Jordan University of Science & Technology (JUST), Faculty of Medicine, Jordan, Mahmoud completed an internship at King Abdullah University Hospital, Irbid, Jordan, and his internal medicine residency at JUST/King Abdullah University Hospital Irbid (KAUH). He joined WashU Nephrology after completing a nephrology fellowship and an internal medicine residency at Wayne State University/Detroit Medical Center, Detroit, MI.
Mahmoud’s leadership and teaching background is extensive. He founded wellness and curriculum committees during his time as Chief Medical Resident in Jordan and coordinated innovative educational programs such as the Radiology-Medicine Meeting. His passion for nephrology was sparked by a complex ICU case and deepened through his transplant training, where he recognized the transformative potential of kidney transplantation for patients with end-stage kidney disease.
In addition to his clinical work, Mahmoud has contributed to research on antiphospholipid syndrome and peritoneal dialysis-related pleural effusion, with presentations at national meetings.
Outside of medicine, he enjoys jet-skiing, hiking, and road trips, and has a special fondness for Mansaf, a traditional Jordanian dish.
