After nearly four decades of service to WashU Nephrology, Daniel Coyne, MD, is retiring at the end of 2025.
Dr. Coyne first came to WashU as a renal fellow in 1986 and joined the faculty upon completing his training. Following a three-year appointment at Case Western Reserve School of Medicine in his home state of Ohio, he returned to WashU, where he has remained ever since.
Over the course of his career, Dan became a cornerstone of the Division, serving as Medical Director of the Chromalloy American Kidney Center and the Medical Multispecialty Clinic, and leading the Nephrology Fellowship Program from 1999–2007.
Known for his dedication to patient care and mentorship, Dan has guided generations of fellows and residents with warmth, rigor, and a passion for science. His research of anemia and renal bone disease, including the landmark DRIVE trial, reshaped the management of anemia in dialysis patients and improved care for countless patients with chronic kidney disease.
As he steps into retirement, Dan looks forward to time with his wife, nine grandchildren, and tending to his “gardening challenges” at home and at his lake property.

His legacy at WashU Nephrology is one of excellence, mentorship, and innovation, and his impact will continue to be felt across the Division.
