The Division of Nephrology welcomes Sarah Wingate, BSN, MSN/FNP, our new transplant nurse practitioner.

Sarah began her medical career in 2006 as a nursing assistant at Danville Care Center in Iowa, during which time she earned her bachelor’s degree in nursing at Iowa Wesleyan University.  In 2012, Sarah moved to St. Louis and worked as an RN on 16400, the abdominal transplant surgery unit at Barnes-Jewish Hospital Transplant Center while completing her graduate studies.  She earned a master’s degree in the Family Nurse Practitioner Program at Maryville University in 2017.

Returning to her home town in Iowa in 2017, Sarah worked in family medicine for a short while before moving to general nephrology where she provided education classes (including instruction on renal disease and hypertension) as well as guidance in the management of dialysis with out-patient dialysis patients.  Regarding her return to St. Louis, Sarah says, “I was there [in Iowa] for a little over two years when I was notified of a job opening up in renal transplant from my old co-workers at Barnes and couldn’t pass up the opportunity!”

Sarah is dedicated to building strong relationships with patients and families and believes that being an advocate for a patient will help achieve the best possible outcomes.

She and her husband, Emanuel Navarro, who is in the US Army, have a two-year-old daughter, Aliña.  Favorite pastimes include watching movies and shows with her husband, traveling, and spending time with her daughter.
