Frank O’Brien, MD, FASN, Assistant Professor of Medicine, Division of Nephrology, is the recipient of the LeJIT Teaching Award for his outstanding performance during the 2022 Block 6 Medicine Clerkship (November – December 2022).
The LeJIT award is given for completing “just-in-time” assessments (“JITs”) and providing meaningful, timely feedback to students, which helps them develop their skills, while creating a positive learning environment that encourages feedback and growth. Recipients of the LeJIT teaching award are selected by the Division of General Medicine Gateway Medicine Clerkship. O’Brien will receive a printed copy of the award along with a “2 LeJIT 2 Quit” sticker, a reference to the pop culture 2 Legit 2 Quit 1991 classic by rapper MC Hammer.
O’Brien earned his medical degree, with first-class honors, from University College Cork, Ireland, and completed his residency in internal medicine at the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland, with subsequent transplant specialty training at Beaumont Hospital Dublin. After higher specialty training in nephrology at the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland, he completed a fellowship in nephrology at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California. He joined WashU Nephrology in 2017.
As Associate Program Director for Curriculum Development, O’Brien is an integral part of our Nephrology Fellowship Program. Providing mentorship and guidance to our renal fellows in a training program designed to develop leaders in investigational and clinical nephrology, he strives to ensure that our fellows leave our program as the “best trained in the country.” He organizes the core curriculum service for each academic year, allowing fellows to get a broad and thorough education. O’Brien is also involved in the development of specific curricula for our in-center hemodialysis and home modalities programs and has received multiple clinical research grants.
