Morgan Schoer Receives WashU Nephrology’s 2025 Hellman Memorial Teaching Award

Morgan Schoer, Associate Program Director of our Nephrology Fellowship Program receives the 2025 Nathan Hellman Teaching Award.

WashU Nephrology congratulates Morgan Schoer, MD, Assistant Professor of Medicine, on receiving the 2025 Nathan Hellman Memorial Teacher of the Year Award.

Dr. Schoer joined our faculty in 2023 and assumed the role of  Associate Program Director of our Nephrology Fellowship Program, of which she is a graduate.  She also serves as the Medical Director of WashU Nephrology’s Home Modalities and is a medical student coach.

The annual Hellman Teaching Award is selected by our nephrology fellows and recognizes outstanding dedication to education.  Recipients receive an inscribed plaque and a cash award to support professional development.  The award was established in 2018 through a generous gift from former WashU nephrology fellow Richard Hellman, MD, and his wife, Patricia, in memory of their son, Nathan E. Hellman, MD, PhD.  Nathan earned his dual degrees at WashU and was completing his nephrology research fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital, when he passed away from stroke complications in 2010 at age 36. Nathan was also founder of the Renal Fellow Network.

“I feel lucky to spend my days teaching and learning alongside such a thoughtful and curious group of fellows, and I’m so grateful to know that my teaching has been helpful and meaningful to them.  In this department full of very skilled and enthusiastic educators, I’m particularly humbled to have been chosen for this award.”

During her fellowship, Schoer was strongly committed to patient advocacy.  She was selected as an intern for the ASN Policy and Advocacy Committee and participated in the 2022 Kidney Health Advocacy Day, helping shape public policy through meetings with Capitol Hill lawmakers.  Her advocacy continues today through her service on the advisory council of the Missouri Kidney Program (MOKP), which supports underserved kidney patients by funding transportation, medications, and other essential resources.

In 2023, Schoer was honored with the Knowlton Incentive for Excellence Award, presented by The Foundation for Barnes-Jewish Hospital.

Our fellows shared their heartfelt reflections on Dr. Schoer’s impact as a teacher. Here are a few anonymous highlights:

“She’s passionate about education, is very thorough, competent & well rounded. She truly deserves this award and sets the bar high for future recipients.”

“Fantastic role model, great bedside teaching skills, genuine concern for fellow wellness, outstanding educator!”

“She teaches all the time and helps in anything you ask for help. Explaining topics, reviewing presentations etc.”

“Dr Schoer is an excellent teacher and mentor. My favorite thing about her teaching style is how infectious her love for knowledge is. You can truly see how she enjoys the process of finding answers and has clarity in answering questions. Fellows can confidently go to her for questions at any time. She is calm, collected and creates similar learning environments. Her didactics are also top notch and engaging.”

“Best teaching session I attended all year was Dr. Schoer’s fellow’s board review.”

“I believe that Dr. Schoer is the perfect candidate for this award given the amount of high-quality individualized and group teaching that she has provided for the fellows. Additionally, she has provided support for the infrastructure of education within the fellowship program, which can be an overlooked, but crucial part of being an educator.  She serves as a role model for fellows and faculty when it comes to quality educational practices.”

Again, congratulations to Dr. Schoer! Her achievement is well-deserved and a testament to her commitment and exceptional skills.
