Monica Chang-Panesso Awarded KidneyCure Grant

Monica Chang-Panesso to study repair of the aged kidney.

Monica Chang-Panesso, MD, Assistant Professor, WashU Medicine Division of Nephrology, has been awarded funding from the KidneyCure Transition to Independence Grants Program, a foundation of the American Society of Nephrology (ASN).

This prestigious program supports early-career investigators in establishing themselves as independent researchers.  The grant will fund Dr. Chang-Panesso’s project Elucidating the role of metabolic reprogramming in the repair capacity of the aged kidney.

Since joining WashU Nephrology in 2015, Chang-Panesso has demonstrated a passion for bench research in addition to her clinical practice.  Her work investigates the molecular mechanisms kidney repair after acute injury, with a special focus on aging alters this response and contributes to failed recovery.  Her recent accomplishments include being named the inaugural recipient of the Roger M. Perlmutter Career Development Professorship in 2021, and receiving a five-year K08 Mentored Clinical Scientist Research Career Development Award in 2020 to study tubular senescence and proliferative capacity of the aging kidney.

“I am very grateful to KidneyCure for selecting me for this amazing award to support my studies and I hope to contribute to their goal of A World Without Kidney Diseases.”

Dr. Monica Chang-Panesso

KidneyCure, the largest kidney-focused private research funder, currently supports a cohort of 45 investigators, 23 of whom were added in 2025.  Funded projects span a wide range of basic and clinical science.
