Jeffrey Miner Among Leading Experts at Alport Syndrome Research & Regulatory Workshop

Dr. Jeffrey Miner
Jeffrey Miner, a leading expert in Alport syndrome research

Jeffrey Miner, PhD, FASN, Eduardo and Judith Slatopolsky Professor of Medicine in Nephrology at Washington University, was among the 35 workshop participants of the Alport Syndrome Research & Regulatory Workshop recently held in Cambridge, MA. Sponsored by the Alport Syndrome Foundation (ASF), the two-day event brought together researchers, clinicians, FDA and NIH representatives, patient advocates, as well as members of the ASF’s Scientific Advisory Research Network (SARN) and Medical Advisory Committee – all dedicated to advancing therapeutic development for this rare genetic kidney disease.

Highlights of the workshop include updates to clinical guidelines, expanding international data collaborations, and mapping regulatory pathways to accelerate drug development.

Participants of the Alport Syndrome Research & Regulatory Workshop, organized and sponsored by Alport Syndrome Foundation, May 8 & 9, 2025.

Dr. Miner is one of eight leading researchers serving on the SARN panel, established in 2021 to drive foundational research in Alport syndrome.  The group is currently exploring CRISPR/Cas9 as a potential curative approach, investigating how collagen IV affects kidney function, and examining how collagen IV plays a role in hearing, vision, and pregnancy across different forms of the disease.

An internationally recognized expert in basement membrane biology, Miner’s research focuses on the glomerular basement membrane’s role in kidney filtration and disease, particularly in Alport syndrome and Pierson syndrome. His laboratory uses advanced imaging and genetically engineered mouse models to investigate how mutations in laminin and collagen IV contribute to disease progression, and how targeted therapies might restore normal kidney function.

In 2024, Miner received support from an ASF research grant awarded to Carmen Halabi, MD, PhD, WashU Pediatrics, to explore the presence of aortic aneurysms in Alport mice.  That same year, he was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the world’s largest multi-disciplinary science society, and in 2023 was named Treasurer for the American Society of Nephrology (ASN), serving a term from 2024-2027.
