Time to Fill Out Your NephMadness Bracket for 2019!

The 7th annual NephMadness is under way!  NephMadness, hosted by AJKD Blog, is an online interactive medical education activity modeled on March Madness, the NCAA college basketball tournament, except with nephrology concepts.

Using social media, interactivity, and gamification, the nearly month-long tournament encourages a good-natured, robust discussion of the latest advances and the most important breakthroughs in nephrology.

The competition starts with eight main topics (i.e. regions) that are each divided into four competing subtopics (i.e. teams).  Each topic is introduced by an in-depth review of the subject written by an expert in the field.   The bracket listing all 32 topics was announced March 15.  Winners for each matchup are determined by majority vote from the Blue-Ribbon Panel before the start of the tournament.

Directly involved with NephMadness this year are two members of WU Division of Nephrology.  Assistant Professor Timothy Yau, MD, the Social Media Editor for AJKD Blog, is on the NephMadness planning committee, and Assistant Professor Anuja Java, MD, was asked to write the in-depth review of one of the main topics (complement).

“NephMadness is such a fun and innovative way to teach nephrology,” says Dr. Java.  “Therefore, when the organizers of NephMadness mentioned that they were planning on having an entire region dedicated to complement-mediated renal diseases and asked me if I would be interested in writing for it, I delightedly accepted the offer!”  Java’s research focuses on defining the functional consequences of genetic mutations identified in complement-mediated kidney diseases such as atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome and C3 glomerulopathy.

Friends, family, patients and co-workers are encouraged to fill out brackets.  Visit AJKD Blog to learn about all the teams in the tournament and submit your picks by March 31 at 6:00pm EDT.  For prizes, see contest rules.  This year includes a new Group Prize category of Best Party; take a photo(s) and tag #NephMadnessParty.
