Benjamin Humphreys Appointed to ASN Executive Council

Benjamin Humphreys, ASN Executive Councilor, 2026-2029

WashU Nephrology is celebrating the appointment of Benjamin Humphreys, MD, PhD – Joseph Friedman Professor of Renal Diseases in Medicine and Chief of the Division of Nephrology – as the newest Executive Councilor of the American Society of Nephrology (ASN).

A prominent figure in kidney research and regenerative medicine, Dr. Humphreys will help guide strategic decisions, advocacy, and scientific programming that shape the future of nephrology at a national level.

Appointment as Executive Councilor places Humphreys on the presidential track for the American Society of Nephrology. He is slated to serve as ASN President in 2028.

Humphreys’ research focuses on understanding the cellular and molecular mechanisms of kidney injury and repair, with the goal of developing stem cell–based therapies for chronic kidney disease.  His lab uses advanced single-cell and spatial transcriptomic technologies to map kidney regeneration and fibrosis, identifying new therapeutic targets for patients with acute and chronic kidney injury.

Recently appointed Associate Editor for the Journal of Clinical Investigation, Humphreys previously served as president of the American Society for Clinical Investigation (2023-2024) and as a member of the Board of Scientific Counselors for the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases. The ASN also appointed Rasheed A. Gbadegesin, MBBS, MD, FASN, of Duke University, as the newest At-Large Councilor.  Drs. Humphreys and Gbadegesin will begin their terms on January 1, 2026, serving through December 31, 2029.
